I love it when people tell me they barely noticed my presence in the big moment of their lives. True documentary is getting harder to come by – I have kids rushing at me after one frame to get a look at the back of my camera, people are just so aware now. A lot of what I do in newspapers is setting up a shot to make it look natural – or as my first boss Phillip Biggs called it, making something out of nothing.

So when there is free rein given to just shoot it as it is, and get some real moments, it reminds me why I started shooting in the first place. I still remember the first shot of a moment I captured – my cousin reaching to my pony, the pony arching his neck to reach the little fingers… It’s a healthy rush to chase.
