Working on a street newspaper for 8 years got me access to shoot some of the biggest names in band history. The challenge was coming up with an idea that made it seem as if I had them in my own studio, even if we were restricted to a hotel room or lobby, coming up with something suitable for a front page in my allotted 3 minutes. Deadlines were always looming, and if they were late on call times (which was nearly always) I would have sweat trickling down my back as my face said ‘that’s fine, you guys are cool’.
The Darkness brothers Justin and Dan Hawkins were very late, and stood still for one frame before trying to nick off. I put my mum hat on and demanded he came back – he grabbed a sandwich and posed stuffing it in his face – perfect. I had my shot. Noel Gallagher told me he hated cameras, so I pretended my camera was offended, making him smile. He still didn’t smile for the shot though, but at least he relaxed a little.
